President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure as the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government comes to an end today. The 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority was held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja where he is expected to pass on the torch to another leader.
Tinubu was harmoniously appointed d as chairman in July 2023 at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. Since then, he has dealt with challenges especially the military coups in member states.
Tinubu initially stood against the unconstitutional changes of government in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea, and he oversaw the imposition of sanctions on them. The sanctions however were later lifted as the sub-regional body opted to go for a more peaceful approach to resolve the issues.
He also played a critical role in ensuring the success of the 2024 Senegalese election by ensuring and facilitating dialogue between stakeholders. This was as he demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting democracy in the sub-region during the year.
