Statistics have shown that many Nigerians hold negative attitudes towards native languages leading to their neglect. Parents no longer want to teach their kids native languages, even among peer groups a person that speaks and use its native language too much is looked down on, elementary and secondary schools refer to native language as vernaculars. A lot of stigma and low prestige is given to the usage of native language even among its native speakers. If we don’t use and respect our language who will?
I believe native languages shouldn’t be neglected even if there’s fear of limited opportunities, parents may believe that speaking a native language will limit their child’s opportunities or hinder their ability to succeed in a globalized world. Yet I believe the usage of a native language fosters a sense of identity and belonging. I think it’s essential to recognize that native languages are not a hindrance to success in a globalized world. Instead, they can enrich our experiences, broaden our perspectives and provide a unique advantage in a diverse and interconnected world.
In my view, I feel we should stop seeing native languages as inferior or unsophisticated we should instead speak it with pride because it tells our story and identity. In the linguistics world, no language is inferior the usage of native languages alongside other languages helps preserve cultural heritage, promote linguistic diversity and inclusivity a garden with one flower is not as beautiful as a garden with diverse varieties of flowers.
Moreover I also believe the incorporation of native languages in schools will enhance cognitive abilities and academic performance. Because research has shown that students taught in their native or first languages assimilate better and quicker.
Native languages should also be considered better in the language planning and policy and there should also be more availability of support, resources such as school materials, dictionaries, curriculums and so on to aid native language education.
Let’s work together to challenge the stigma surrounding native languages in Nigeria and promote their value and significance. We owe it to ourselves, our children, our identity, our pride, our bond and our rich cultural heritage.
