LAGOS WILL SOON ENJOY STABLE POWER SUPPLY – COMMISSIONER

Mr Biodun Ogunleye, the State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources assured Lagosian during a one day public hearing on the bill on Wednesday at the assembly complex.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bill for a law to repeal the Lagos State Power Sector Reform Law 2018 is to make provision for creating and administrating the Lagos electricity market and matters related to it.

Erstwhile President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law on March 17 2023 an amendment to the constitution that allowed the State in the mission to generate transmit and distribute electricity in areas covered by the the national grid. There was a blackout in the country as the national grid for the fourth time in 2024 collapsed on Saturday.

The Commissioner mentioned that the bill, if passed into law, would allow the State Government to directly generate transmit, and distribute electricity to end users. He assured all electricity users in the State that after the bill had been signed, they would have access to quality electricity.

During the public hearing, Mr Ogunleye mentioned that about 20 thousand street lighting poles are presently functioning and in conclusion he said the State is looking forward to the third reading of the bill when comments and suggestions from stakeholders would have been considered.
