The Presidency has affirmed that the extension of the capital section of the 2023 Supplementary Budget’s lifespan is intended to facilitate the comprehensive execution of the budget’s provisions.
This clarification comes in response to concerns raised by BudgIT, a civic platform, regarding the Senate’s decision to extend the budget’s lifespan, resulting in the concurrent implementation of three national budgets.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the National Assembly’s action is aimed at addressing funding constraints that have hindered the implementation of various projects in the 2023 Budget and Supplementary Budget.
By extending the budget’s lifespan, the government seeks to ensure that all allocated funds are utilized efficiently, and that ongoing projects are completed without delay. This measure demonstrates the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective resource management.
In essence, the Presidency has reassured that the budget life span extension is a deliberate step towards achieving the full implementation of the budget, and not a deviation from established procedures.
