The speech, titled ‘PUNCH: Fit for the future,’ is part of a weeklong celebration acknowledging the contributions of key stakeholders and media industry leaders to PUNCH’s success. PUNCH Newspapers, Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper, was founded in March 1973 and marked its 50th anniversary on March 18, 2023. However, the celebrations were postponed due to the election period. The anniversary events began on February 24, 2024, with a novelty football match at Onikan Stadium, Lagos. The festivities continued with a three-day photo exhibition showcasing 50 iconic photographs from PUNCH’s archives at the Alliance Francaise de Lagos/Mike Adenuga Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos, which concluded on March 1, 2024. Visitors praised the newspaper’s founder, Chief James Aboderin, for his legacy.

The anniversary celebration includes today’s dinner and will conclude with a staff party on March 9, where current and former staff will be honored for their contributions to PUNCH’s achievements. Legal practitioner Femi Fajolu commended the newspaper for its resilience and impact over 50 years, particularly in a challenging environment. Jahman Anikulapo, a former arts editor at The Guardian and current curator, highlighted PUNCH’s enduring relevance and leadership in the media industry, praising the newspaper’s commitment to quality journalism and its appreciation of photographers.
