Aston Villa has disclosed the signing of left-back, Ian Maatson from its Premier League rival, Chelsea for a reported fee of €37.5 million. The club disclosed this on Friday amidst the defenderʼs match with the Netherlands at the European Championship 2024 in Berlin, Germany as a replacement for injured Barcelona star, Frenkie de Jong. The 22-year-oldʼs transfer to Aston Villa makes him the second signee of the club this summer following the arrival of forward Lewis Dobbin from Everton.
Maatson had a €35 million release clause in his contract which expired earlier this month, allowing Chelsea to bid a higher price for his transfer to Aston Villa. Aston Villa is preparing for the Champions League football next season after emerging fourth in the top flight.
