Dr Roselyn Isimeto,a lecturer at the University of Lagos speaking at the Deep learning Indasx Nigeria 2024 conference in Abuja, state the importance of generative AI for the continent businesses and also adopting Gen AI which can help African companies use the influence of technology to drive profitable and innovation .
Generative AI is the Artificial intelligence Systems designed to generate new content based on the data they have been trained on which includes text, images, messages, videos and more. The traditional AI analyse and classifies data, generative AI produces new and original output.
Furthermore, she said lack of adequate Gen AI skills is a major challenge, stating that building those data driven applications Is necessary to fuel the required data and brings out the innovations.Numerous businesses would have benefit from Gen AI such as, marketing and advertising for content creation, personalized marketing copy, customer service through conversational agents and sentiment analysis, finance and banking for document generation and fraud detection.
For medical care, Gen AI can aid in medical diagnostics, treatment planning, drug discovery, and enhanced patient care and support.Media and entertainment industry could use it for music and video generation, image enhancement, while the education sector could benefit from personal learning experience and empowering educators.
Other sectors that could gain from Gen AI include agriculture, legal, real estate, manufacturing, retail, energy, human resources, and fashion. Isimeto says the adoption gap for generative artificial intelligence would be beneficial to African sectors if we can implement this idea and use the Gen AI effectively.
She cited an example with a case study of building a Large Language Model application, stating that it involved several steps, “from having knowledge about your requirements to deploying the application”.
Isimeto further used a practical demo to help participants learn how to start building Gen AI applications. To close the adoption gap, Isimeto advised sectors to consider innovating their products, processes, business model, service, marketing innovation, etc.
