Some people might argue that music is just mere entertainment, I believe the choice of music has a level of influence on individuals.
Personally, if I watch a movie I tend to act or talk like the characters for some days I feel this also applies to music. Music can have little or huge impact on individuals. According to a study published in the journal “Aggression and Violent Behavior (2013)” found that exposure to violent music increased aggressive thoughts and behaviors in participants.
I’m convinced that music is a form of expression and universal language that can stir emotions, inspire actions and shape identity. Fela Kuti’s for example, used his music as a tool to rebel in commentary and political field.
Music is also an element of culture. It’s role in cultural preservation and transmission is also significant, as it helps to pass down traditions, values and beliefs from one generation to another. Protesters use music to convey their feelings and show passion.
We can’t also forget the importance of anthems in countries, organizations and societies. The lyrics and melodies of anthems often evoke feelings of patriotism, pride and belonging.
I think music is a multifaceted and powerful art form that can inspire, educate, impact and unite people across cultures and generations not just for entertainment. So let us embrace the power of music, but also be mindful and intentional of the impact it can have on our lives. Let us choose music that inspires, edifies us, music that aligns with our values and promotes positivity rather than music that harms and degrades us. Guide your mind.
