Nigeria recently commemorated the 25th anniversary of its democracy on June 12, a milestone highlighting the country’s commitment to sustaining democratic governance over the past quarter-century. However, challenges persist in achieving the expected maturity of its governmental branches.
The current administration under President Bola Tinubu faces significant hurdles, underscoring Nigeria’s ongoing democratic journey. Recent conflicts in Kano and Rivers states vividly illustrate these challenges.
Rivers State has become a focal point of political strife, with clashes between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, plunging the region into turmoil. Similarly, in Kano, political maneuvers surrounding the Emir’s case have strained judicial processes and incited political unrest, disrupting the state’s stability.
Amid these crises, law enforcement agencies, particularly police commissioners in Rivers and Kano, find themselves navigating a complex environment of conflicting court rulings and political pressures.
Their task of maintaining order amidst heightened tensions underscores the delicate balance they must strike between legal obligations and public safety.Criticism of the police often overlooks their resource constraints and operational challenges.
Despite these obstacles, the commissioners in Kano and Rivers have shown commendable professionalism and impartiality during turbulent times.Reflecting on past incidents, such as the contentious arrest of former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige orchestrated by political forces, highlights the risks faced by law enforcement in politically charged environments.
The memory of Assistant Inspector General Raphael Ige’s involvement in that incident serves as a cautionary tale.Looking forward, it is crucial for current security chiefs like Rivers State’s Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, and Kano’s Salman Garba, to uphold professionalism and neutrality. Their role is pivotal in maintaining peace amid ongoing political tensions, akin to the challenges faced in the past by figures like AIG Ige.
