Until July 2019, Ibadan Airport faced neglect and decay. That changed when Senator Kola Balogun, newly elected to represent Oyo South Senatorial District, stood up in the Senate. He proposed to upgrade Ibadan Airport from local to international status. Senator Balogun, equipped with his political science background, passionately argued for the upgrade, highlighting Ibadan’s historical and political importance in the South-West.Senator Balogun lobbied his colleagues, including former Aviation Minister Stella Oduah and Senator Ibn Na’ala, who supported his vision. The Senate adopted his motion, forming a committee to investigate. In July 2021, the committee visited Ibadan to assess the airport’s condition and budget needs.Governor Seyi Makinde praised Senator Balogun for his hard work in making the airport upgrade a reality. Balogun also engaged Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema to start flights to Ibadan, crucial for international status. On August 17, 2021, Air Peace made its inaugural flight to Ibadan, marking a historic moment. Oyo State government improved access roads and firefighting capabilities at the airport.Now, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the airport’s upgrade, thanks to Senator Balogun’s persistence and foresight. His efforts promise to transform Ibadan into a regional economic hub and reduce travel challenges for many.
