Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opposed an application by former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for the release of his passport to facilitate an overseas medical trip. Emefiele’s defense counsel, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, sought permission for Emefiele to travel to the UK for medical treatment, but the EFCC’s prosecution counsel, Muhammad Omeiza, argued against it, citing a lack of medical evidence and the availability of local treatment options.
Omeiza also contended that releasing Emefiele’s passport would violate his bail conditions and that Emefiele posed a flight risk due to his alleged connections and ongoing trials in three different courts. The defense dismissed these arguments as speculative and suggested that an international red alert could be issued if Emefiele failed to return. Justice Hamza Mu’azu adjourned the ruling on the application until July 16, 2024.
