The Executive Director Of Paradigm Initiative, Gbenga Sesan has laid some ethical issues on concerning the data security in Nigeria revealing some careless act at the National Identity Management Commission where he stated that his organization who supports the cause of digital rights and inclusion across Africa,figure out that the National Identity Number slips were being sold with the amount of N100 and that has breached the privacy and exposing millions of Nigerian’s identity.
The Executive Director Of Paradigm Initiative, Gbenga Sesan made a statement to a local newspaper that “Our data is not safe ,that’s is what they have established”. ” It is not safe not because we don’t have the certification. The National Identity Management Commission claims they have certifications, of course they do”. With all of this documents they have , multiple of some data are breached and leaking the recent ones .
In the month of June , the National Identity Management Commission issue a statement and warned citizens of Nigeria to beware of fraudsters and some illegal acts on some fraudulent websites like idfinder.com.ng.verify.ng , championtech.com.ng,trust online.com.ng, and anyverify.com.ng.
The National Identity Commission Management gives an assurance to the public that their nation’s database is safe and sound from the from cyber threats and connecting to ISO – 27001 :2013 standards and with the contribution of the Nigeria Data Protection Law.
Sesan who is the Executive Director Of Paradigm Initiative added that to secure data is more than just a certifications because those who break the rules will be punish. He said there is no 100% safe data anywhere in the world. But once you find out that there is a leak,the scapegoat who cross the line he or she will be punish and make it difficult for them not to do it again. He further stated that,Nigerians lacks corrective measures and culture of impunity after breaches.
So,Sesan ,the Executive Director Of Paradigm Initiative discuused the ethical issues that gives an account that their organization ,the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has now purchase data including the minister and head of commission of the organization just to know how far they have gone and to lay down gaurds so he called for some immediate acts and thorough investigation after some illegal breaches and future breaches and emphasising the need for accountability and safeguarding the data for future use.
