The Academic staff union of universities have directed their members across the states to kick start a nationwide protest.
In a broadcast messages sent to all brach chairmen and chairwomen of the union of the Academic staff union of universities and is made available to the media in Adisasababa in Ethiopia on Monday, the union has said that the protest would begin on August 8, 2024,across the nations and states.
The union has said the protest would follow the recent refusal of the government for not meeting their stated requests thereby leading to a peaceful protest by the union
The statement read,”The Academic staff union of universities has met on Thursday,28th July 2024, to assert the position of increasing the salaries of its members but there was a refusal by the government as a result the peaceful protest begins”
Corresponding, the national JAC on invitation met with the minister of education, Honorable minister of state for Education, permanent secretary and other top officials of the ministry and national universities commission.
The government has not showed any attempt in meeting the needs of the members and other pressing issues in the union.
It is so painful and embarrassing that the ministry of education and all other top officials in other universities that they were invited were not in seat to receive the union that was called on. The permanent secretary who represented the minister of education was on seat to listen to the pending issues on ground.
A one day protest should be held on August 8,2024,at each branch simultaneously and no members should slack on it which will enable the government to take the union serious about the demand for the increase in salaries.
A national protest will also be held by Monday 15th August 2024,after the minister of Education will meet with the executive and announce the date for the indefinite strike if the request has not yet been attended to .
Further information will be communicated properly and appropriately. Thank you for your usual cooperation.
