The governors of Nigeria’s 36 states have assured labour of their commitment to ensuring better wages for workers. They have also agreed to engage with key stakeholders in order to reach a solution that is agreeable to all parties involved the governors have expressed concerns over the Federal Government’s proposed ₦60,000 minimum wage, calling it unsustainable.
The governors argued that such a wage would result in many states having to use their entire monthly federation account disbursements to solely pay salaries. In response to the concerns of the governors, President Bola Tinubu has said that the administration would prioritise the welfare and security of Nigerians with more people-focused economic policies.
The president also assured that a better national minimum wage would be worked out to reflect the realities of the times, and that the federal and state governments would work together on the minimum wage review.
