Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for Raping and Impregnating Daughter

A Bayelsa State High Court has sentenced 41-year-old Baridapsi Needam to 14 years in prison for raping and impregnating his own daughter.The victim, who was seven years old when the abuse started, gave birth to a baby girl during the trial.

The prosecution, led by Pere Amanda Egbuson, presented evidence that Needam had been abusing his daughter since she was seven, culminating in her pregnancy in 2020.A DNA test revealed a 99.99% match, confirming Needam as the father of the child.

Presiding Judge Justice D.E. Adokeme ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Needam to 14 years in prison.The judgement is seen as a deterrent to others who commit similar crimes.

The lead prosecuting counsel, Egbuson, praised the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice for supporting the prosecution.Dr Dise Ogbise-Goddy Harry, a renowned advocate against violence against women, commended the court for ensuring justice.

She noted that the sentence would serve as a warning to others who engage in such heinous acts.The case highlights the importance of protecting children from sexual abuse and ensuring that perpetrators face justice. The sentence is a step towards ensuring that victims receive the justice they deserve.
