Shettima asks investors to unlock potential in non-oil sector

Mr Kashim Shettima,the Vice-President called for a significant shift from dependence on oil to other critical sectors with attractive investment returns in Nigeria. He made the call on Friday during the Existing Foreign Direct Investors Roundtable at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He identified agriculture, manufacturing, renewable energy and digital innovation, among other sectors as potential investment areas.He stated that the eight-point agenda of the Renewed Hope administration of President Bola Tinubu signals diverse avenues for investment in these sectors.

He assured the investors and other development partners of a business environment characterized by transparency, accountability, and regulatory certainty.He surveyed that with the non-oil sector contributing 93.62 per cent to Nigeria’s GDP in the first quarter of 2024, it was imperative to explore other critical sectors of the nation’s economy.

Mr Shettima said these sectors align with the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).He added that with the significant shift we will be able to explore other sectors like agriculture,manufacturing, renewable energy and digital innovation.

He analysed the importance of investment in the life of a country’s economy. He said that it is not just about the financial returns but to build lasting legacies and to make contributions to the society. Gov. Ododo extends tenure of Kogi LG caretaker chairmen by 6 monthsKogi State House of Assembly on Friday approved the extension of the tenure of the 21 Local Government Areas Transition Committee Chairmen in the state by six months.

It followed a request by Governor Usman Ododo, seeking approval of the Assembly to extend the tenure of the chairmen, which was expected to end on July 8.

Mr Ododo in a letter to assembly, said that the state could not conduct local government election at this time due to paucity of funds, the high wage bill among other pressing needs.

He expressed the hope that before the expiration of the extended tenure in Jan. 8, 2025, the state government would have successfully conducted the LG polls. The speaker Umar Yusuf thereafter, announced the resolution of the house at plenary for the approval of six months tenure extension for the 21 LGAs transition committee chairmen.

He said by this resolution today, July 5, 2024, the state house of assembly has extended the tenure of transition committee chairmen by another six months. Umar Yusuf however, charged the 21 transition committee chairmen to be good ambassadors of their respective local government areas by introducing people to oriented policies and programmes.

He added that the TC chairmen should note that in the next six months, he will be here again for submission of his reports to the ssembly.
