Nigerian communication commission warns subscribers against buying pre-registered SIM cards

The Nigerian communication commission (NCC), the telecommunications regulatory body warned mobile phone subscribers against buying pre-registered SIM cards. The warning comes as a response to the growing of fraudulent activities associated with pre-registered SIM cards. Pre-registered SIM card are cards that have been fraudulently activated using stolen or fake identity information, bypassing the mandatory registration process. This illegal practice enables fraudsters to use these cards for various fraudulent activities including scams, fraud and other criminal activities. According to NCC pre-registered sim should be rejected and registration of SIM cards to the actual users for security and accountability purposes. The NCC said subscribers who purchases pre-registered SIM cards can leads to fines or penalties for non-compliance with telecommunication regulations. The NCC says any organization that use pre-registered SIM cards for official purposes, face operational risk when these SIM cards are deactivated or flagged due to non-compliance which can disrupt business communication and operations.
