SGF Calls for Independent, Corruption-Free Judiciary to Boost the Maritime Sector”

At the 17th International Maritime Seminar for Judges, the Secretary General of the Federation (SGF) stressed the importance of an impartial and corruption-free court in boosting the maritime sector.

He emphasized the importance of the maritime sector to the economy, as well as a strong judiciary in attracting foreign and domestic investment.

The SGF emphasized the need of a resilient and independent judiciary in making transparent, fair, and speedy court rulings that follow internationally recognized criteria.

He acknowledged the need for adjustments to the Nigerian Shippers’ Council’s enabling statute and endorsed the National Assembly’s attempts to develop a strong port economic regulatory framework.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, emphasized the importance of comprehensive legal and regulatory systems in the maritime sector. He noted that judges play a crucial role in interpreting and applying maritime law, resolving disputes, and promoting justice.

He assured that the ministry is working to strengthen institutional and legal frameworks.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Shippers Council, Pius Akutah, highlighted the need to update the Nigerian Shippers Council Act, promulgated in 1978, to reflect modern realities in the maritime sector.

He expressed hope that a new law will provide a regulatory framework for the sector, promoting business growth and development in the Nigerian maritime sector.
