Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, has reiterated the importance of investing in the health and education sectors of the national economy. He emphasized that these sectors are critical for national development and urged government agencies, donor organizations, and individuals to prioritize investments in these areas.
On Tuesday, Obi announced a donation of N10 million to Grimard College of Nursing Sciences in Anyigba, Kogi State, North-central Nigeria. He visited the institution and praised its role in training healthcare professionals, stating that investing in the younger generation is essential for the progress of the nation.
Obi expressed concern about the brain drain in the healthcare sector, with many Nigerian healthcare workers leaving the country. He noted that this has resulted in an uneven distribution of healthcare workers to the population, with only 55,000 licensed doctors serving a growing population of over 200 million. He urged the government and donor agencies to invest in the sector to address this challenge and improve the welfare and knowledge of health workers.
“Investing in education and health is crucial for our national development,” Obi said. “We must prioritize these sectors to address our development challenges and export healthcare professionals to the global community. I am committed to building a new Nigeria with access to quality healthcare and educational opportunities.
“Obi’s donation to Grimard College of Nursing Sciences is part of his commitment to supporting education and healthcare development in Nigeria. He believes that investing in these sectors will have a positive impact on the country’s growth and development.
