An organization, the National Action on Sugar Reduction, has warned Nigerians about the misconception that having a potbelly signifies a ‘good life’. They highlighted that belly fat is associated with a higher risk of hypertension, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.The group emphasized that many Nigerians mistakenly view obesity as merely being chubby or fat, without realizing that abdominal fat, or a ‘pot belly’, constitutes obesity.In a statement by the group’s secretary, Omei Bongos-Ikwue, it was revealed that nearly six million Nigerians suffer from hypertension due to obesity.Bongos-Ikwue, a public health expert, mentioned that the organization has initiated a campaign called “BigBelleFitKillPerson” to address 47 million Nigerians with abdominal obesity, featuring impactful visuals to raise awareness of the health dangers of abdominal obesity.
