Tattoo Experts Warn of Blood Cancer Risk

Oncologists and hematologists in Nigeria have warned individuals against getting any tattoosThere is a link between getting a tattoo and having blood cancer most especially lymphoma. A UK based consultant clinical oncologist from St. Luke’s Cancer Centre named Dr. Charles Okwonna explained the high risk of developing blood cancer from tattoo.

People who have tattoos near lymph nodes, such as the neck, armpits, and groin are at a more higher risk of getting blood cancer .

The process of getting a tattoo involves injecting ink beneath the skin which can migrate into the lymphatic system and reach lymph nodes, causing genetic damage and cellular changes that contribute to the development of lymphoma.

The quality of tattoo ink and the skill of the tattoo artist play crucial roles in preventing blood cancer with cheaper inks containing more impurities will increase the risks.

Dr. Okwonna also laid emphasis on the importance of awareness and caution, particularly for youths with a history of cancer or compromised immune systems. He urged everyone to prioritize their health and consider the potential risks before getting a tattoo.
